Potential Energy

Potential energy is energy due to position. If a body is in a position such that if it were released it has a potential to do some work such as move or push, it has potential energy.The energy possessed by an object due to its change in position or shape is called potential energy. The SI units are joule (J). These are two common forms of potential energy gravitational and elastic.
